Sometimes, we see whitish broadband like a white glowing path across the sky on a clear starry night. It is a cluster of millions of stars. This band is the Milky Way galaxy. Our solar system is a part of this galaxy. In ancient India, it was imagined to be a river of light flowing in the sky. Thus, it was named Akash Ganga.
A galaxy is a huge system of billions of stars, and clouds of dust and gases. Millions of such galaxies make the universe. It is difficult to imagine how big the universe is. Scientists are still trying to find out more and more about it. Any way our earth is the third planet from the sun as well as in our solar system. It is the only planet in our solar system with liquid water on the surface, just slightly larger than the nearby venus.
We all are living here in the earth. It’s the only planet known to have an atmosphere containing free oxygen, oceans of water on its surface and, of course, life. But such type of other planet has not been discovered in our solar system as well as in universe where man can live. Earth is the fifth largest of the planets in the solar system. While Earth orbits the sun, the planet is simultaneously spinning on a line called an axis that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. Earth takes 23.934 hours to complete a rotation on its axis and 365.26 days to complete an orbit around the sun. Earth situated in an average distance from the sun ie, 92,956,050 miles or 149,598,262 kms.
Earth’s atmosphere has no definite boundary, slowly becoming thinner and fading into outer space. Three-quarters of the atmosphere’s mass is contained within the first 11 km of the surface. The lowest layer is called the troposphere. Energy from the sun heats this layer, and the surface below, causing expansion of the air. Above the troposphere, the atmosphere is usually divided into the stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere. Each layer has a different lapse rate, defining the rate of change in temperature with height. Beyond these, the exosphere thins out into the magnetosphere, where the geomagnetic fields interact with the solar wind. Within the stratosphere is the ozone layer, a component that partially shields the surface from ultraviolet light and thus it is important for life on earth. The hole in ozone layer leads to global warming which is a threat for our earth.
Rising industrial activities, deforestation, soil degradation, nuclear testing, attitude towards war are the best weapons to devastate our beautiful earth. Ultimately, the human will suffer more than other living species in the world.
Another beautiful companion of earth is moon. The earth has a supersized moon. It’s always among the solar system’s most overgrown satellites. Space men like Neil Armstrong, Rakesh Sharma visited moon earlier and they gave some vital fact for research. The gravitational interaction between the earth and the moon causes tides, stabilizes earth’s orientation on its axis, and gradually slows its rotation. According to radiometric dating estimation and other evidence, the earth was formed over 4.5 billion years ago. Some geological evidence indicates that life may have arisen as early as 4.1 billion years ago.
Over 99% of all species that ever lived on the earth are extinct. Almost 8 billion humans live on the earth and they depend on its biosphere and natural resources for their survival.
Apart from that, creatures on earth are amazing. Still so many astonishing facts are there in earth. It is somewhere hottest somewhere driest and somewhere lowest or weirdest. Earth bears poisonous gases, crackling lava lakes, and salty mirages make the Danakil Depression. There are wonderful facts in earth like underseawater fall near Mauritius, boiling river at Amazon and Bermudatriangle etc.
Presently the Corona virus has affected the people on earth. Till date 141 million people have been affected out of which above 3 million people have died. It is our responsibility to protect ourselves from Corona and ultimately the earth will be more beautiful as it was earlier. We cannot imagine earth without humans. Air, water, soil on earth are used and cared only by humans. So relationship between human and earth is symbiotic. Earth gives us water to live, oxygen to breathe, land to reside. Earth establishes nature to nurture.
Therefore, we consider earth as mother always. We play and live in the lap of earth. So it our responsibility to protect the earth from any kind of harms either manmade or by nature.
