Barley Neck Inn gains Outdoor Entertainment License

Some neighbors complained about noise from outdoor live music last summer but the select board will allow performances on weekends this summer.

EAST ORLEANS — Tunes near the dunes will again be played outside the Barley Neck Inn.

The Beach Road restaurant’s application for an outdoor entertainment license from Orleans drew written comments from 50 people, and many in-person comments at two recent Select Board meetings, both pro and con.

In the end the seven day a week, six hour a day request was significantly scaled back but there will still be outdoor weekend music on the weekends from May till November, weather permitting.

This summer the inn, at the corner of Beach and Barley Neck roads, will use a multi-speaker system to reduce noise beyond the property – speakers will be focused inward rather than outward and town noise bylaws will be enforced.

Musicians perform on the front lawn.

“We were without music for a whole year and this is such a delightful way to celebrate the reopening of Orleans,” said Hank Schumacher during public comment on Wednesday. “Because of the pandemic we’ve been unwilling to go inside. Leave it open till nine o’clock.”
