Bill Maher Is Fully Vaccinated And Has Tested Positive For Covid-19 Coronavirus

Did television personality Bill Maher recently tweet about Covid-19 without actually mentioning the words “Covid-19”, “coronavirus”, “testing”, or “vaccine?” Well, as you can see in the following tweet from Thursday, he did mention, “thanks to all wishing me get well,” something about a streak going back to 1993, and former Baltimore Orioles star baseball player Cal Ripken, Jr.:

Taken by itself, this tweet didn’t seem to have an obvious connection to Covid-19. For example, you might tell someone to “get well” after being hit in the face with some broccoli. And the word “streak” could mean a whole lot of different things as well.

Well, about two hours earlier the Twitter account for the HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher which is hosted by Maher (otherwise it would be called Real Time with Someone Else) had twitten or had twoted something much more specific about the situation:

So this tweet from the show provided a lot more context, certainly more than a Ripken mention, which incidentally may have led to “Cal Ripken” trending on Twitter:

So it looks like Maher has been receiving Covid-19 tests on a weekly basis. And he is already fully vaccinated against Covid-19. And he just tested positive for Covid-19. And his show “has taken every precaution following Covid CDC guidelines.” These all seem to be reasonable approaches as a Covid-19 coronavirus infection should be dealt with seriously even if you currently feel fine.

Apparently, Maher’s show has been taking the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic quite seriously. As I detailed previously for Forbes, Maher had said on his show just last month, “over the past year the pandemic has prompted the medical establishment, the media, and the government to take a scared straight approach, to getting the public to comply with their recommendations.” But it’s not clear whether he and his show had to be “scared straight” to take Maher’s covid-19 coronavirus infection seriously. Over 585,000 people in U.S. have already died from Covid-19, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. Many more have suffered through hospitalization or longer term effects of the infection.

Although Maher has used his show as a platform for anti-vaccination viewpoints in the past, as described by Sara Boboltz for the HuffPost, that didn’t seem to dissuade Maher from getting the Covid-19 vaccine. Getting fully vaccinated can significantly bring down the risks of bad Covid-19 outcomes. Based on the show’s tweet, Maher doesn’t seem to be having any symptoms, which is good news and could very well be due to the vaccine. As I have described previously for Forbes, Covid-19 vaccines can offer from 70% or so to over 90% protection against severe Covid-19. Therefore, even if you do get infected with the virus, being fully vaccinated can greatly reduce your chances of having symptomatic and more serious Covid-19.

Of course, protection from the Covid-19 vaccines is not perfect, as Maher’s reported situation re-emphasizes. The vaccines are not like gigantic full-body concrete condoms, which by the way you shouldn’t be wearing on any occasion. “Breakthrough infections” can occur. A breakthrough infection is when a fully vaccinated person still gets infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2).

Just because breakthrough infections can occur doesn’t mean that the Covid-19 vaccines in general don’t work. After all, you don’t throw away your smartphone the moment Siri makes a mistake like:

Similarly don’t discount the Covid-19 vaccines just because breakthrough infections do occur. As of April 26, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had received only 9,245 reports of breakthrough infections after over 95 million in the U.S. had already been fully vaccinated against Covid-19. A quick calculation with your abacus or your fingers and toes will reveal that reported breakthrough infections comprise less than 0.01% of the fully vaccinated total. Sure, not all breakthrough infections may have been detected and reported. Regardless, those fully vaccinated seem to be getting Covid-19 at a much lower rate than those who haven’t. Just make sure you maintain reasonable precautions even after getting fully vaccinated especially when the virus is still actively spreading around you.

Maher’s tweet didn’t reveal too much about his opinions of Covid-19 testing, precautions, and vaccinations now. In the past, Maher has suggested that the flu vaccine gave him the flu, which is a bit like saying that a condom made you pregnant, and has helped perpetuate claimed links between vaccines and autism without much backing scientific evidence, as covered by Nina Shapiro for Forbes. Maher has also called concerns about Covid-19 “panic porn.” But can you really call it such when he and his show have been taking CDC-recommended Covid-19 precautions all along?
