Granted money from the city of Hendersonville, the Community Foundation of Henderson County and the Arts Council of Henderson County to “open safely,” The Center for Art & Entertainment at 125 S. Main St. is opening April 23 with the theater downsized and socially distanced as a result of COVID-19 challenges.
According to Managing Director Jeanie Linders, “We are very excited, but it’s not going to be ‘theater as usual’ for awhile as we work to assure the health and safety of our audience and staff members.”
Aware that funding challenges have affected arts and service nonprofits throughout Henderson County, CAE is making the use of the theater space available to groups that need a “safe” space to hold an event to raise funds or visibility to their supporters or audience members at no charge through its Community Committed Program.
“The center was designed to be a ‘community’ center, offering performances and arts-based activities to area residents and guests. We want to take the meaning of community even farther, eliminating rental fees so that groups can hold events in a safe environment… and not as a drive-thru in a parking lot,” said Linders.
“Tens of thousands of dollars have been invested in safety equipment, protocols and staff training. We have the opportunity to help lay the foundation for business as usual. More importantly, the psychological benefits of reconnecting to those who share a mission or vision is also important as we all move on from the pandemic.”
As a performance space, the center has access to actors, musicians, dancers and artists to help create a unique event which will employ members of the creative community.

Call for artists
The center has reconfigured its seating capacity with 6-foot seating for safe distancing by adding 22-by-22-inch “art” end tables.
To maintain the theatrical experience in a club-like setting and showcase the talents of area artists in the 2021 season exhibit, CAE is partnering with The Arts Council of Henderson County in the “Step up to the Table” fundraiser.
Artist talent will be showcased and live theatrical entertainment will continue as The Center re-opens its doors bringing locals and visitors.
Working with a table sponsor, the artist will create original art on the wood table canvas, signed by the artist and including the name or company logo of the sponsor. The artist name and sponsor will also be displayed at the entry of the Main Stage area and included in the virtual program on the website.
Although sponsors may have a concept for artists to incorporate, the artist is creating an art piece, not a billboard.
In addition to the recognition listed above, artists will receive a voucher for two complimentary tickets to the show of their choice at The Center for Art & Entertainment.
Artist interested in participating in this unique “art show” should call 828-697-8547 or email [email protected] for the application.
Proceeds from Step up to the Table benefit The Arts Council of Henderson County and CAE. The fee is $200 per table. For sponsor information, email [email protected]
