As per a new study, fasting before starting a diet can increase the benefits of the diet, promote weight loss and lower blood pressure.
For the study, researchers looked at 71 volunteers with metabolic disorders and high blood pressure as they were about to start a three-month diet. The participants followed the DASH diet, which improves blood pressure and includes eating whole grains and lean meats. Half the people started their diet with a five day fasting period with no solid food.
It was found that participants benefited from the diet, but the fasting group had more positive results for their body weight and blood pressure than their non-fasting peers.
The positive side effects of fasting were maintained even at the end of the three-month diet.
