Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Jimmy Neesham and Tim Seifert aren’t part of New Zealand’s 13-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh, having been handed a break to spend time with their family before their IPL stints. Meanwhile, Finn Allen and Will Young have received their maiden call-ups while Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne return to the squad after injury lay-offs.

Allen had a stand-out season in the Super Smash competition, finishing as the leading run-getter with 512 runs at an average of 56 and a strike rate of 193. Young, who made his Test and ODI debut this season, scored a century for Central Districts against Auckland apart from a couple of half-centuries in the 297 runs he scored off seven innings in the Super Smash.

“It’s especially an exciting time for Finn, who will be getting his first taste of the BlackCaps environment. His Super Smash campaign with the Firebirds was nothing short of outstanding and we believe he has the skills to succeed at the next level,” said selector Gavin Larsen.

“We’re delighted to see Lockie and Adam return after working really hard to get back to this point. They are two of the premier fast bowlers in world cricket and it’s fantastic to be able to call on their services, in what is shaping as a big year of T20 cricket,” he said.

Milne hasn’t played for New Zealand since November 2018 with various injuries keeping him out of action. He was part of the Sydney Thunder squad in the Big Bash League, featuring in 12 matches in which he picked up five wickets and had an economy of 7.56, including 1-6 off four overs against Adelaide Strikers in what was the second best economical performance in the BBL. Ferguson, who claimed 5-21 in New Zealand’s season-opening T20I against West Indies, was sidelined due to a back injury.

Ferguson, Milne and Allen, who are also part of different IPL squads, will depart for the tournament immediately after the T20I series against Bangladesh, which will be played on March 28, March 30 and April 1. Tim Southee will captain New Zealand in the absence of Williamson while Devon Conway will keep wickets. The squad also includes Daryl Mitchell and Todd Astle.

“The six guys who will miss this series are incumbents in our T20 side and the decision to give them some time at home with family before they embark on a long stint in India, was principally made with their welfare in mind,” said Larsen. “We’re also very aware of the need to give others opportunities in a World Cup year and it’s great to be able to introduce Finn and Will to the set-up, as well as welcome back Lockie and Adam.

“Tim’s a great leader in any BLACKCAPS side, we’ve seen how well he’s slipped into the T20 captain’s position in the past and we look forward to him continuing to grow in the role. Devon’s wicket-keeping skills are a real asset to have in a squad and we’re keen to ensure he has some international experience in this role to provide us with another option going forward,” Larsen added.
