Martial arts film The Assassin has beaten the likes of Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road in a recent poll to find 2015’s best film.
The Taiwanese film came top of Sight & Sound magazine’s Film of the Year Poll, which is voted for by 168 critics.
The film’s director Hou Hsiao-Hsien already picked up Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Todd Haynes’ Carol narrowly missed out on the top spot after coming second, while Tom Hardy’s Mad Max: Fury Road was third.
Sight & Sound editor Nick James said: “…finding George Miller’s mega-chase-movie Mad Max: Fury Road in third place might seem a surprise.
He added: “But many critics have waited a long while for such a sharp, vivid and imaginative blockbuster.”
Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse documentary Amy was also in the top 10, while It Follows and Pixar’s Inside Out came in 11th and 14th place, respectively.
