Born Allen See in Mount Kisco, New York on February 28th, 1931 — he changed his “confusing” name at the behest of an acting coach, he wrote in his memoir This Is Your Captain Speaking — MacLeod studied acting at Ithaca College, graduating in 1952.
After making his TV debut with a small role on a 1957 episode of The Walter Winchell Files, MacLeod accrued bit parts in movies and on television shows throughout the late Fifties before landing a guest spot on The Dick Van Dyke Show in 1961 — his first time working with Moore — and his first significant TV role on the sitcom McHale’s Navy. After playing Seaman Joseph Haines on over 70 episodes, MacLeod would eventually that sitcom in order to appear alongside Steve McQueen in the 1966 war film The Sand Pebbles.
In 1970, MacLeod was cast as news writer Murray Slaughter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show; he first auditioned for the role of producer Lou Grant, which went to Asner. MacLeod appeared on all 168 episodes of the acclaimed sitcom’s seven-season run and, almost immediately following the show’s conclusion in 1977, landed a role that would keep him on television consistently for another decade: Captain Merrill Stubing on The Love Boat.
Following that series’ nine-season (plus television movies) run, MacLeod continued to be a fixture on television, appearing on multiple episodes of The King of Queens and That 70’s Show, as well as guest spots on Oz, JAG and Murder, She Wrote.
Asner paid tribute to MacLeod Saturday in. “He made everything easy,” he said of his former co-star. “He was a lovely soul who will make heaven brighter.”
Wet Leg Unveil Two New Songs, Album Release Date
Britain’s Wet Leg, one of the most buzzed-about indie groups to emerge in years via their singles “Chaise Longue” and “Wet Dream,” have dropped two new songs and unveiled the release date for their forthcoming debut album and a big pile of tour dates in the U.S. and the U.K.
Hailing from the unlikely locale of the Isle of Wight in southern England, the group’s core members — Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers — have released two new songs, “Too Late Now” and “Oh No.” As Teasdale notes in the the announcement, “Too Late Now” is “about sleepwalking into adulthood. I never imagined that my adult life would look the way it does and I guess this song reflects on some of the pressures and pulls of life. Sometimes I get really inside my head and everything can feel very overwhelming. I think this song is about accepting that life can feel a bit shit from time to time. Maybe don’t indulge that thought too much though. Just take some time for yourself. Take a breath. Have a bath. It might make you feel a bit better.”
The video for “Too Late Now,” directed by Fred Rowson, continues in offbeat surrealism of its predecessors, with the band “beamed in from space to seek out the bubble bath of enlightenment.”
Wet Leg was recorded and mostly produced by Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey (“Chaise Longue” and “Angelica” were produced by Jon McMullen and Josh Mobaraki respectively). The album was mostly recorded in London, in April 2021, meaning they had a finished album before the world had even heard debut single “Chaise Longue” or played live. “I guess how it happened was unconventional,” Chambers admits.
Yet despite the group’s often humorous lyrics and videos, these days, it’s hard to avoid some seriousness creeping in. “Wet Leg was originally just supposed to be funny,” Teasdale says in the announcement. “As a woman, there’s so much put on you, in that your only value is how pretty or cool you look. But we want to be goofy and a little bit rude. We want to write songs that people can dance to. And we want to people to have a good time, even if that might not possible all of the time.”
That message is connecting: Collectively, Wet Leg’s previous singles “Chaise Longue” and “Wet Dream” have racked up over 8.5 million streams and over 3 million views on YouTube, the group is one of Vevo DSCVR “Artists To Watch 2022: and “Amazon Artists To Watch 2022.” In addition, “Too Late Now” just picked up the accolade of being named BBC Radio 1’s “Hottest Record”.
The band are heading to the US next month for their first shows there – already sold out dates in NY, LA and San Francisco – and will also open three CHVRCHES shows in LA and San Francisco. Today, they announce a full North American tour for March 2022. And, having already sold out their April 2022 UK tour, Wet Leg have confirmed a run of intimate UK regional dates at the top of the year.

Omicron COVID variant ‘cause for concern, not panic,’ President Joe Biden says, urging Americans to get vaccines and booster shots
President Joe Biden on Monday described the new omicron COVID-19 variant as a “cause for concern, not a cause for panic,” as he pledged to “spare no effort” in the federal government’s fight against the latest strain and called on more Americans to protect themselves with vaccines and booster shots.
“Sooner or later we’re going to see cases of this new variant in the United States. We’re going to have to face it,” Biden told reporters in the White House, just hours after Canadian officials reported the first case detected in North America. Biden added that his administration would continue research into the variant’s severity and ability to spread, and that his moves would be guided by science and speed, but “not chaos and confusion.”
“We have the best vaccines in the world, the best medicines, and the best scientists,” he said, noting his team was talking with vaccine makers Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson on potential updates to vaccines and boosters to better combat omicron. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden’s chief medical adviser, says the existing vaccines already provide “some protection” against the new variant — protection that is strengthened by a booster shot.
Cases tied to the new variant have been reported in the United Kingdom, Germany, Hong Kong, Australia and the Netherlands after the World Health Organization on Friday designated omicron a “variant of concern.” U.S. officials over the weekend sounded alarms that the variant features several troublesome mutations that may suggest rapid transmission, and WHO said early evidence shows signs of higher chances of reinfection among those who’ve previously tested positive for COVID-19.
Several nations, including the United States, have implemented travel restrictions for a handful of countries in southern Africa where omicron was first detected. Biden defended the travel restrictions that went into effect Monday, saying they “give us time” to ramp up vaccination and booster efforts while studying the variant’s impacts.
Biden said the U.S. had already successfully brought down new case totals after a surge sparked by the highly contagious delta variant this year. News of the omicron variant, however, comes as the U.S. has faced COVID-19 case increases in the Upper Midwest, New England and elsewhere. Massachusetts has seen new cases jump by more than 80% over the last two weeks, and hospitalizations have continued to increase over the last month.
“The best protection against this new variant, or any variants out there … is getting fully vaccinated and getting a booster shot,” Biden said. “If you are vaccinated but still worried about the new variant, get your booster. If you aren’t vaccinated, go get that first shot.”
He also asked Americans to “please wear your mask when you’re indoors in public settings.”
In the coming days, the White House will release “a detailed strategy” to fight COVID-19 through the winter — “not with shutdowns and lockdowns,” Biden said, but with “widespread” vaccination, boosters, testing and more.
“We’re throwing everything we can at this virus,” he said. “That’s how we reopened our country. We moved forward in the face of the delta variant, and we move forward in the face of the omicron variant as well.”
