Hamilton lost his lead at the start, when Red Bull’s Max Verstappen pulled a bold first-corner move on him. But Hamilton’s race strategy proved superior when he took an early second pitstop, and chased down Verstappen in the closing stages – easily passing him to take victory.
The second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas was a distant third, his main moment in the race coming as he briefly held up Hamilton while his teammate was chasing down Verstappen.

How the Spanish Grand Prix unfolded
From pole position Hamilton led the charge to Turn 1, where Verstappen dived down his inside and grabbed the lead, easing Lewis wide on the corner exit. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc passed Bottas around the outside of Turn 3 for third, with Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), Sergio Perez (Red Bull), Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) next up.
Verstappen quickly pulled out of DRS range to Hamilton, as Bottas toiled to find a way past Leclerc. The race was neutralized with a safety car on Lap 8 when the engine of Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri cut-out at Turn 10.
Hamilton was unable to get a run on Verstappen at the restart, while Lance Stroll moved his Aston Martin past Fernando Alonso’s Alpine at Turn 5 for tenth place.
Hamilton set fastest lap to get into DRS range of Verstappen at one-third distance, as the pitstop cycle approached. Bottas was the first of the top five to pit, with Verstappen stopping a lap later – as Hamilton, having got to within half a second of the leader, stayed out.
Verstappen suffered a slow stop, with both left-side tyres being slow to emerge from the garage due to his late call, losing him 2s to Hamilton. However, Hamilton then lost time while lapping the Haas of Nikita Mazepin – which negated his virtual lead over Verstappen. Bottas’s early stop undercut Leclerc for third place.
Hamilton ran several laps longer on the soft tyres he started on, and although he rejoined well behind, his new mediums were four laps fresher. Hamilton slashed the gap to Verstappen and was right on his tail again just after half distance, and despite getting into his DRS range, wasn’t able to get close enough to make a move.
Mercedes opted to pit Hamilton again on Lap 43, which proved crucial to his win. Verstappen stayed out, holding a 23s lead at that point as Red Bull put its strategy on Hamilton not repeating his charge to victory in the 2019 Hungarian GP in similar circumstances.
During Hamilton’s chase, Bottas held up him for half a lap, losing him valuable laptime to Verstappen, and Bottas then pitted anyway for soft tyres. That meant he had to repass Leclerc with eight laps remaining.
With ten laps to go, Hamilton got the gap down to Verstappen under 7s, and was lapping almost 2s per lap faster. Hamilton got into DRS range on Lap 59 and passed him at the first attempt at Turn 1 a lap later.
Verstappen then pitted for fresh softs in a successful bid to take fastest lap – albeit 22s behind Hamilton at that point. Verstappen finished 15s in arrears, with Bottas 10s further back and Leclerc in fourth.
Perez pulled a superb around-the-outside move on Ricciardo at Turn 1 to take fifth. Later on, Ricciardo and Sainz both passed Ocon in the final stint to claim sixth and seventh respectively. Norris also passed the fading Ocon for eighth.
The battle for the final point was intense, as Stroll and Alonso clashed at Turn 1 – with Stroll finally making a move stick there with four laps to go. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly then passed Stroll to snatch the point, this despite a 5s penalty for lining up ahead of his grid spot.

No new Covid cases in 8 districts in region | Nagpur News
Nagpur: Only three districts in Vidarbha — Nagpur, Chandrapur and Yavatmal — reported new Covid cases accounting for all nine patients on Monday. Overall testing was poor across the region, but it was abysmally low in the eight districts which did not report any new cases.
Wardha, with just five, was the worst performer as far as testing was concerned. Bhandara, Akola, Buldhana and Washim were the other districts where testing was below 100-mark.
The Covid testing figures in the region crashed by more than half to little over 3,000. Sunday being a holiday, sample collection centres were closed, though the state Covid Task Force has called for increased testing to ensure the situation doesn’t go out of hand all of a sudden. Another reason for low testing was that some of these districts haven’t reported any new case for the last couple of days. Hence, there are few close or high-risk contacts left to be tested.
The day also saw 18 recoveries in Vidarbha, leaving 121 patients under treatment.
In Nagpur district, of the five new cases, two were from rural, one from city and two from outside district. The district has 43 patients under treatment now.
Yavatmal: No deaths kept the toll unchanged at 1,787. Currently, there are 13 active positive patients under treatment. The administration received 111 reports of which one was found positive. Of the 72,937 positive patients, 71,137, including one on Monday, have recovered. The test positivity rate is 9.53 %, death rate 2.45 % and daily positivity rate 0.90 %. There are 1,759 beds available for Covid patients in hospitals across the district.
Wardha: Five patients were discharged after recovery, leaving active positive just two as no new positive case was reported from 5 reports of Monday. Total recoveries increased to 48,094 and total cases and toll remained unchanged at 4,9426 and 1,326 respectively.
Amravati: No new case, no recovery and no Covid death marked Monday. This left 15 active cases under treatment.
Chandrapur: With four recoveries as against just a solitary detection, the figure of active patients further climbed down to 11 on Monday. The day again remained casualty free. There were 193 tests conducted during the last 24 hours and only one patient was found positive. A total of 7,61,931 samples have been tested out of which 6,71,501 tested negative. The caseload has moved up to 88,852, including 87,298 recoveries and 1,543 deaths.
Washim: The district did not report any new Covid case or recovery on Monday. Thus, the patient tally remains at 4. The district conducted 78 tests in the day. No death took place on Monday.
Gondia: No new Covid case was reported despite testing 293 samples. No discharge or Covid death took place, while seven patients remained under treatment.
Bhandara: The district neither reported any new Covid case, nor discharge on Monday. Two patients are under treatment. Only 16 samples were tested in the district on Monday.
Akola: The district reported zero new cases and recoveries on Monday, keeping the number of under-treatment patients at 10 after conducting 56 tests.
Gadchiroli: The district reported no new Covid cases on Monday after 258 tests, but saw one patient recovering. It now has 4 patients under treatment.
Buldhana: The district has 10 patients under treatment as on Monday, while no new Covid patient was detected in the day in 40 tests, but saw one recovery.
Football: Captains plot their moves as they seek a victory of sorts
PETALING JAYA: For Kuala Lumpur captain Paulo Josue, featuring in the 100th anniversary of the Malaysia Cup final today is something he will remember for a lifetime.
But he does not want to be just part of a historic game. The Brazilian aims to lead his players to a stunning win against their illustrious opponents.
The 32-year-old, who has been one of the top providers in the competition with six assists, said he is excited to be playing in front of a big crowd again.
“Not only that, I think all eyes in Malaysia will be watching the game. It’s a huge privilege for me to be there in Bukit Jalil with our supporters. As captain, I can assure the fans we’ll give our 100%,” said the midfielder.
“It will be tough because we are facing the biggest side in South-East Asia. They’ve won the Super League eight times in a row, so there isn’t much to say about their greatness.
“Coach Bojan (Hodak) just told us to go and enjoy the game. Keep to the game plan, especially in defence and when we have the chance to attack, make sure we hurt them.”
JDT captain and goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Marlias said the players are highly motivated to defend the title and added that a win tonight was crucial as it would be historic.
“We want to put JDT’s name on the trophy because it’s the 100th anniversary. It will be meaningful for the club and us,” said the 35-year-old.
“We have played with them twice before and once allowed them to score through a set piece, it was a lesson to us. So we have to be more focused and not make mistakes in front of goal,” said the 35-year-old goalkeeper.
“We can’t take them for granted. They have strengths, too but what’s important is us, our own preparations.”
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur’s veteran defender Shukor Adan, 42, revealed that the final would be his last game after announcing that he would hang up his boots after 24 years in the sport.
“Whether I’m playing in the final or not, I’m proud of Kuala Lumpur,” said Shukor, who has won the Malaysia Cup four times in 2002, 2005, 2009 and 2011.
“For me, it’s best not to mention the past, because this is the new generation. The game has evolved and whoever is entrusted to play tonight, I’m sure they will give their best.
“Winning the Malaysia Cup would surely be a sweet end to my career.”
Omicron casts shadow on foreign travel plans | Ranchi News
Jamshedpur-based Joydeep Dubey (38), who currently works in Melbourne in Australia, is stressed over his plan to visit his hometown early next year for his cousin’s marriage. Owing to international travel curbs and extended border lockdowns in Australia, he, his wife and two kids couldn’t visit their parents since the past two years.
With Australia now announcing to defer its plan to reopen its border from December 1, Dubey is in a Catch-22 situation — whether to book tickets or not for his scheduled visit in February end next year. “We were excited to return home but the sudden turn of events in the last few days has now making us think again,” he said over a Whatsapp call.
Ranchi-based businessman Dhiraj Kumar and his family had planned a weeklong trip to the Maldives for the New Year but are reconsidering. “Just when the situation seems to be improving, the virus threat is again looming large. While our travel agent has advised us to stay put, we fear on losing out on money on cancellation in the event of a further spike in cases,” he said.
Shailesh Agarwal, chairman of tourism sub-committee of Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) and proprietor of Drishti Travels, said, “In recent times, there has been a major boom in travel and tourism as people from the state are going in hordes to places like the Maldives, Malaysia among others. But we are again flooded with calls mostly from those who booked their international tours till March next year, asking about cancellations. We have bookings of 300 persons in recent weeks for international destinations. We have now stopped any further bookings post March till the situation becomes clear.”
