UK science advisers brace for hundreds of confirmed Omicron Covid cases | Coronavirus

Scientific advisers are bracing themselves for hundreds of UK cases of the Omicron Covid variant to be confirmed in the next week or so, the Guardian has learned.

Some of them may predate the earliest cases of Omicron found in South Africa last week but could still be linked to travellers returning from the country, it is understood. Evidence of community transmission also emerged on Monday.

Omicron, which is believed to be more transmissible than dominant Covid-19 variants and has the potential to evade vaccines, was first reported to the World Health Organization from South Africa on 24 November.

The UK is one of the world’s busiest air transport hubs and, like South Africa, has a large genomics sector to determine the variants involved in infections – increasing the probability both of importing and detecting cases.

On Saturday, two UK cases were announced, rising to three on Sunday – all in people linked to travel to southern Africa. On Monday morning, six new cases involving the Omicron variant had been identified in Scotland and this time some had no travel history.

The finding has raised concerns Omicron may already be circulating in the community in the UK.

Scientists had previously stressed that while flight bans could delay the importation of Omicron, the variant would nonetheless arrive. It was hoped such measures would buy time and let more people get their booster jabs.

Now the Guardian understands that scientific advisers are bracing themselves for the possibility of several hundred cases of the Omicron variant being detected within days. Other scientists said the spread was difficult to estimate.

Prof Michael Tildesley, an expert in the mathematical modelling of infectious disease at the University of Warwick and a member of the modelling group Spi-M that advises the government, said: “It is worth remembering, though, that there is a lag between individuals being infected and cases being reported, so at the point that cases are detected, it is likely that there are more infections in the community.”

Tildesley added that at this point contact tracing could help to detect how many more cases there might be in the population. “But there is still uncertainty regarding how transmissible this new variant is, how effective the vaccines might be and how severe infection is with Omicron.”

Prof Rowland Kao, an epidemiologist at the University of Edinburgh who also contributes to Spi-M, said the discovery of two clusters of cases in Scotland – in Lanarkshire and Greater Glasgow – with no obvious links to each other or to travel, suggested at least two separate instances of importation. “For the moment, we do have to assume there is further community circulations,” he said, adding it would not be surprising to find tens of cases at the moment.

“Of course [if] it does spread rapidly, as initial reports from [South Africa] suggest it can, then it wouldn’t take long for it to go into the hundreds,” said Kao, adding that if the doubling time for cases was similar to the Delta variant, then 25 cases of Omicron now could mean 100 cases in 10 days’ time. “At that point, it would be more a matter of slowing, rather than eradicating Omicron in Scotland. Even then, it would probably only be temporary.”

But Kao said travel restrictions might still bring benefits, potentially reducing the number of outbreaks and, at least for now, helping stamp them out. “However that is not at all guaranteed, and so, as always, more efforts to reduce spread now, may have big epidemiological benefits later,” he said.

“Any measures we put in now may of course, prove unwarranted if in fact, the Omicron variant proves to be sufficiently benign that overall levels of severe infection and hospitalisation stay manageable – but we probably won’t know for several weeks.”

Some experts have called for robust action, including advice to work from home. Stephen Reicher, a member of the behavioural science advisory group Spi-B, and a professor of psychology at the University of St Andrews, said: “With Omicron, even if it turns out to be less serious than we feared, we need to put basic protections in place.”

RSVP now for December 2: ‘Squid Game’ panel with cast and crew

One of the hottest shows worldwide in 2021 is “Squid Game” for Netflix! And now we are reuniting the cast and crew for a one-hour roundtable chat with our senior editors Marcus Dixon and Rob Licuria.

Enjoy creator, director, writer and showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk along with stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-jun, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi and Kim Joo-ryoung. We’ve also got key crafts talent Chae Kyoung-sun (production designer), Jung Jae-il (composer) and Jung Jai-hoon (visual effects supervisor).

RSVP today to this specific event by clicking here to book your free reservation. We’ll send you a reminder a few minutes before the start of the show.

Netflix dropped all nine episodes of the show on September 17 and it quickly became a word-of-mouth sensation. The series tells the story of down-on-their-luck people in dire need of money who receive mysterious invitations to join a dangerous life-or-death version of their childhood games in order to win a cash prize of 45.6 billion won (which is around a not-too-shabby 38 million bucks). Of the 456 participants from all walks of life who are locked into a secret location to play Game 1, only a handful are left to play Game 6.

The breakout South Korean hit is now the streaming giant’s most-watched show ever, viewed by over 142 million households globally. Last month, it was confirmed to be eligible for stateside awards like the SAG Awards and Emmys.

Multi-hyphenate Hwang Dong-hyuk created and produced “Squid Game,” writing and directing all nine episodes. Since his debut feature film “My Father” in 2007, Hwang has won numerous awards both internationally and at home in Korea, including for his period epic “The Fortress” (2017) and drama “Silenced” (2011).

Iconic leading man Lee Jung-jae plays Gi-hun, in desperate need of a large sum of cash to help his daughter overseas and his unwell mother. The actor is one of the most sought-after stars in Korea, most known for his work in “The Thieves,” “New World,” “The Face Reader,” “Assassination,” the “Along with the Gods” series and “Deliver Us from Evil.”

Park Hae-soo plays the calculating Sang-woo, one of Gi-hun’s neighborhood pals who is up to his neck in debt from a failed investment. Park is best known for his roles in drama series “Prison Playbook,” and films “By Quantum Physics: A Nightlife Adventure” and “Time to Hunt.”

Wi Ha-jun plays undercover cop Jun-Ho who infiltrates the game looking for his missing brother. He’s best known as the love interest in “Something in the Rain” and “Romance Is a Bonus Book” to the two-faced serial killer in “Midnight.”

Jung Ho-yeon makes her acting debut as pickpocketing North Korean defector Sae-byeok. The breakthrough performer first rose to prominence as joint runner-up of “Korea’s Next Top Model” in 2013, sweeping international runways ever since.

Heo Sung-tae plays villainous gangster Deok-su is on the run after losing everything at a casino. The actor is one of the veterans of the cast, having featured in films like “Hitman: Agent Jun,” “Black Money” and “The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful” and TV series “Beyond Evil,” “Psychopath Diary,” “Watcher” and “Different Dreams.”

Indian expatriate Anupam Tripathi plays Pakistani migrant worker Ali, whose hopes for the “Korean Dream” turned into a nightmare at the hands of a manipulative and neglectful employer. This is Tripathi’s follow up to his breakthrough role in the Korean Netflix space opera “Space Sweepers.”

Kim Joo-ryoung plays the troubled and unpredictable Mi-nyeo, who has always done whatever it takes to survive in the real world. She is best known for her roles in “The Snob” and “Land of Happiness” and TV series “Kingmaker: The Change of Destiny” and “When My Love Blooms.”

Award-winning production designer Chae Kyoung-sun is best known for her work on Hwang’s “The Fortress” and films “A Melody to Remember” and “Twenty.”

“Squid Game” is composer Jung Jae-il’s first time working with Hwang and his first time composing for a TV series, after a successful career as a film composer, most notably for Oscar-winning Bong Joon-ho‘s “Okja” and “Parasite.”

Visual effects supervisor Jung Jai-hoon brought a wealth of experience to the intricate visual and practical effects on “Squid Game,” having worked in Korea on various film productions over the years.

adidas Dame 8 “Dame Time” Release Date GY0383

On the court, Damian Lillard hasn’t been off to the start he might’ve hoped for in the 2021-22 NBA season, but that isn’t deterring him and his Three Stripes family from introducing the world to the adidas Dame 8.

First teased by the Portland Trail Blazers guard during an alumni exhibition game at Weber State held in August, the model is effectively the brand’s first basketball sneaker with sustainability in mind – 50% recycled materials are used across the top-half. A mix of synthetic overlays and mesh paneling make up the entirety of the upper, boasting a shape similar to the two previous adidas Dame shoes. Color-blocking, logo placement and material layout follow design cues laid out by preceding silhouettes, though the upcoming sneakers feature more padding and nods to the Olympic gold medal-winner at the heel. The Dame 8‘s most different detail from its predecessors is the cushioning solution found at the midsole; LIGHTSTRIKE is replaced with BOUNCE PRO foam. While the new solution promises similar qualities to the one its replacing, the dual-density foam delivers an ideal balance between energy return, cushioning and support, likely to address issues that arise during the end of the season, or in Lillard’s case, olympic efforts after the regular season and playoffs. Lastly, the outsole is slightly modified from the Dame 7, though the outermost areas maintain the same tread pattern.

Enjoy official images of the pair here below, and anticipate an and big-box retailer release around December 17th.
