Prolonged agitation hits Covid-19 testing, vaccination in Punjab | Chandigarh News

Chandigarh: The prolonged agitation by Punjab health employees against the government has started to impact Covid-19 testing and vaccination in the state. Testing and vaccination are the most important factors in controlling the spread of the coronavirus. The timely identification of infected people and preventing severe illness, hospitalisation and death from the virus are all dependent on these two tool of fighting the pandemic.
The employees of National Health Mission (NHM), auxiliary nurses and midwives (ANM’S) and Covid volunteers who have been performing duties related to testing and vaccination are up in arms against the government for their long-pending demands.
With a strong workforce of about 12,000 NHM employees abstaining from work, the Covid testing count in last the two weeks has come down to 24,946. The test per million population during the week lasting on November 23 was recorded as low as 688.
What is more worrying is that 11 out of 22 districts even failed to match the state’s overall weekly average. Fazilka was the worst impacted by the strikes as only 243 tests per million population were done in the district, followed by Moga where the figure stood at 326. In Mansa, 374 tests per million population were done, 383 in Hoshiarpur, 498 in Muktsar, 526 in Sangrur, 530 in Bathinda, 540 in Faridkot, 559 in Amritsar, 588 in Ferozepur and 594 in Patiala.
The steep drop in testing numbers has left the Union government worried, which has directed the state government to increase the testing and also closely monitor the prevalence of respiratory distress symptoms, influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI).
In the ongoing month, as many as 14,55,857 beneficiaries have been jabbed, 60,660 on average per day.
The situation is not expected to improve as warring employees have announced not to return to work till their demands are not met.
NHM employees association state president Dr Inderjeet Singh Rana said all workers had stopped performing their duties. Aware that the strike was impacting Covid testing and vaccination, Dr Rana said: “We were forced to take this step after the government failed to keep promises made to us.”
Punjab deputy chief minister O P Soni said the government was going to fulfil all their genuine demands. He, however, said that there was a process in place which needed to be followed. “I have a meeting with the senior official on November 26 to discuss their issues,” he said.
Underutilisation of resources
The RT-PCR testing capacity of the state-run labs remains underutilised. The state-run facilities are: GMCH Patiala (12,000), GMC Amritsar (12,000), GGMCH Faridkot (12,000), GADVASU Ludhiana (2,500), NRDDL Jalandhar (2,000), Punjab Biotech Incubator Mohali (2,500) and Forensic Science Lab Mohali (2,500).

“Trump won’t run,” John KellyJohn Francis KellyMORE, a former Homeland Security secretary who served as Trump’s chief of staff for a year and a half, told The Atlantic. “He’ll continue talking about it; he may even declare, but he will not run. And the reason is he simply cannot be seen as a loser.”

Kelly has remained relatively quiet since leaving his post at the White House in 2019, though he has spoken critically of Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Yet his remarks to The Atlantic underscore the ongoing debate among Republicans about what Trump’s political future holds.

While the former president has made sporadic public appearances and hinted that another presidential run is on the table, some party officials and operatives are skeptical that he’ll actually pull the trigger on a 2024 White House bid.

Mumbai: New India Assurance has paid health insurance claims worth Rs 2,350 crore on account of Covid during the first six months of the current financial year. This had resulted in the incurred claims ratio rising to 126% in the first half of FY22 from 74% in the same period of previous year.
The state-owned non-life company is the largest provider of health insurance with a premium of Rs 8,812 crore in the first half, which is around 47% of its total book. New India’s health business has grown 53% in the first half, making up for the negative growth in motor insurance and helping it report 17% growth in the first half. “Q2FY22 was one of the most challenging quarters in recent times in terms of profitability. However, in terms of business growth, the company grew around 20% compared to the industry growth of about 13%,” chairman Atul Sahai said in a recent analyst presentation.
Despite the adverse claims position, New India managed to report a profit supported by investment income. “On the positive side, the net worth has increased from Rs 36,451 crore in March 2021 to Rs 39,921 crore as of September 30. Investments, assets have also gone up from Rs 68,639 crore in March 2021 to Rs 82,001 crore as of September 30. The operating expenses were also lower,” said Sahai.
Of the Covid claims paid by New India, Rs 1,250 were in Q1FY22 and Rs 1,100 crore in the second quarter. Although the second wave of the pandemic had receded by the second quarter, a larger chunk of the claims came under the reimbursement mode. Covid claims have fallen in the third quarter, but New India has been hit by Rs 235-crore claims due to floods in Maharashtra.
