Saif Ali Khan: A star in Bollywood – and on Netflix

Saif Ali Khan, bonafide Bollywood royalty and star of Netflix hit “Sacred Games”, says India’s massive film industry does not need international audiences to thrive. But that may not be a good thing, he cautions.

The 49-year-old actor, whose latest film “Jawaani Jaaneman” (“Youthful Lover”) is out on Friday, has starred in multiple blockbusters over the years, from “Dil Chahta Hai” (“The Heart Desires”) in 2001 to “Tanhaji”, released earlier this month.

Yet even as foreign films — like South Korean hit “Parasite” — find viewers and awards overseas, Bollywood has remained on the fringes of global entertainment, content to target India’s 1.3 billion population and millions of others from the diaspora.

“The thing about our culture… is that we don’t really need verification, validation, appreciation from an outside culture,” Khan told AFP in Mumbai.

“There are so many of us that if we just keep each other happy then we don’t financially need anything,” he added.

But he warned that while such an insular approach may not harm Bollywood’s bottom line, it could be “dangerous” for the industry’s development.

“Cinema is about people meeting, comparing, collaborating because the human condition is quite similar. But if we isolate ourselves… I think we will lose out on something because we will keep catering just to ourselves,” he said.

The son of cricketing legend Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi — whose family ruled the former princely state of Pataudi — and actress Sharmila Tagore, Khan has never shied away from taking risks, straddling Bollywood and art-house cinema during his decades-long career.

Even so, the opportunity to play troubled policeman Sartaj Singh in “Sacred Games” in 2018 was a turning point.

“I think Sartaj Singh did a lot for me. People who don’t usually watch Hindi films watched ‘Sacred Games’… and working with all those people in that environment helped my acting a lot,” he said.

Bollywood ‘renaissance’

The first big name from Bollywood to embrace digital entertainment, Khan said the ambition displayed by Netflix and others has the potential to upend the status quo, even in movie-mad India.

“Historically the money has been in the big screen, at least in India,” he said, “so a lot of mainstream actors… would think twice before doing television”.

When actors speak out on political topics, all too often, the issue is completely ignored and the actor who said it is highlighted and abused and trolled

But streaming services are “challenging that notion”, he said, while also offering actors greater opportunities and contributing to a “renaissance” in the industry.

For his part, he has played everything from a commitment-shy chef in the 2005 hit “Salaam Namaste” to a murderous drifter in the 2006 black comedy “Being Cyrus” to a Shakespearean villain in “Omkara”, an Indian adaptation of “Othello”.

Describing today’s Bollywood as a “big umbrella” that accommodates art-house cinema, crowd-pleasing “masala” musicals, low-key comedies and even zombie movies, Khan said the variety helps him “feel sane”.

“There’s something always to be said for something that challenges you mentally or makes you feel that you are going into some territory that is interesting… I would like to mix it up as much as possible.”

Risky business

His latest movie is an out-and-out entertainer, but even here, Khan has departed from the norm by playing father to a 21-year-old woman in an industry where leading men in their fifties routinely romance decades-younger actresses on screen.

Yet, despite his openness to experiment with roles, Khan says there are areas where he feels nervous to tread, such as politics, echoing concerns shared by many actors who steer clear of expressing opinions on divisive issues.

With India gripped by a wave of protests against the government’s new citizenship law, some have bucked convention by speaking out, most notably female superstar Deepika Padukone earlier this month.

But Khan, who is married to top actress Kareena Kapoor, says he prefers to be apolitical.

When actors speak out on political topics, all too often, “the issue is completely ignored and the actor who said it is highlighted and abused and trolled,” he said.

In some cases when religious radicals have taken offence at an actor’s comments, stars have faced boycott calls and threats, he said. Theatres have also been attacked, putting livelihoods at risk.

“You have to think five times before you endanger other people.”

Alongside them, we will see so many great inspiring actors like Abhishek Banerjee, Deepak Dobriyal and Paalin Kabak. Varun Dhawan has posted the first look poster of ‘Bhediya’ along with a short 17 seconds promo in his Instagram account, which has already gone viral.

This upcoming horror-comedy is directed by Amar Kaushik, who has also directed “Bala” and “Stree”. The film is set in the same universe of Stree and Ruhi. The story is created by Niren Bhatt, who has also penned down “Asur” and the popular TV show “Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah”.

Just like Stree and Roohi, Bhediya too has gotten its inspiration from popular folklore and legends from Arunachal Pradesh. The film was also shot there. The movie promises to take the audience by surprise with its amazing visual effects. “Bhediya is a VFX movie. We wanted to create a movie that will stand out internationally in this genre. We put a lot of effort into making something unique and path-breaking.” Said Niren Bhatt.

The film has stunning visuals it features Hollywood’s premier effects from Mr. X. Mr. X is a technicolor creative studio that has given us the Oscar-nominated ‘Love and Monsters’ and the Emmy-winning ‘Vikings.’

Bhediya will be the first Hindi movie to collaborate with Mr. X studio. To pull this Epic tale off, we knew we needed an expert in the visual industry, said producer Dinesh Vijan.

The company that was behind the effects of ‘WandaVision’, ‘Mortal Kombat’, ‘Hellboy’, and ‘Ad Astra’, will deliver a stunning visual world in ‘Bhediya’.

Bhediya Movie Release Date

The film was shot during the second wave of coronavirus. The shooting ended in July. The film is presented by jio studio and Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films and is expected to hit the theatres on November 25th next year.

This is a *super* weird way for Republicans to attack Joe Biden

“Over 800 pounds of fentanyl were seized at our Southern Border in October,” wrote Stefanik. “This is Biden’s Border Crisis.”

After all, Stefanik is talking about 800 pounds of fentanyl that WERE seized at the border, right? Meaning, presumably the border patrol under the Biden administration did the seizing?

While I couldn’t find the specific 800 pound number that Stefanik references in her tweet, there is no question that lots and lots of fentanyl has been seized in 2021 at our southern border.

In May, CNN reported that “so far this fiscal year, which runs October to September, [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] said it seized 6,494 pounds of the synthetic opioid, surpassing the 4,776 pounds seized in fiscal year 2020.”
And last month, the Drug Enforcement Agency announced that it had seized more than 1.8 million pills laced with fentanyl as well as 1,570 pounds of fentanyl powder as part of a two-month sting designed to reduce the amount of the drug in the country.
“During the past eight weeks, DEA has targeted the criminal drug networks flooding the U.S. with deadly, fentanyl-laced fake pills,” said Anne Milgram, the head of the DEA. “DEA remains steadfast in its commitment reduce drug-related violence and overdose deaths by dismantling the violent, criminal drug distribution networks across the United States.”

What’s weird is that Stefanik’s attack is not a lone event.

Earlier this month, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel tweeted this: “899 lbs of fentanyl and 15,631 lbs of methamphetamine were seized at the southern border in October alone.”
And a couple weeks before that, Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley tweeted: “Welcome 2 Pres Biden’s America where 10,000 pounds of fentanyl hv been seized by Customs & Border patrol so far this fiscal yr which is enough to kill over 2 billion ppl or more than 1/4 of the world’s population.”

Which, again, would McDaniel and Grassley have preferred the alternative?

And then there was this from Indiana Sen. Mike Braun on Monday as well:

[email protected] seized enough fentanyl to kill the entire U.S. population 7 times over at the border THIS YEAR. When will Biden prioritize the safety of Americans? We need to #BuildTheWall That much fentanyl is the equivalent of 204 MILLION lethal doses. We need border security!”

Braun linked to an op-ed piece on Fox News that, in addition to laying out the number of fentanyl deaths in the United States, argued that “the Mexican drug cartels get their fentanyl, or the ingredients to make it, from the People’s Republic of China.”

If you’re looking for logic here, well, don’t hurt yourself by straining too hard. I suppose the argument is that fentanyl is a crisis in America and one way to judge that is by the amount coming across the border that authorities seize — and, naturally, the idea that they don’t get anywhere close to all of it.

But, it’s a significant logical stretch to cite seizures of drugs as proof that the Biden administration is somehow failing. Because if drug seizures are failures then what does success look like?
