Triphala: What are its benefits and why you must have it daily

When we talk about Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system, Triphala is one herbal mixture that is always mentioned due to its powerful properties. What is Triphala?
The word Triphala is made from two words- tri + phala- which means three fruits. It is named so because the herbal mixture is made of three dried fruits native to India namely-Indian gooseberry (Emblica Officinalis), black myrobalan (Terminalia chebula), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula).

Triphala is considered a polyherbal medicine, meaning it consists of several different medicinal herbs. In Ayurvedic medicines, polyherbal formulations are popular because it is believed that combining synergistic herbs results in increased therapeutic effects and benefits.

The three fruits in Triphala
Triphala is a mixture of three dried fruits of the following three plants native to India:

Indian Gooseberry: Also known as amla, Indian gooseberry is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, amino acids and compounds like phenols, tannins, phyllembelic acid, rutin, curcuminoids and emblicol. This fruit can help to remove toxins from the body, regulate the health of the pancreas, manage cholesterol levels, and keep your bones strong.

Black myrobalan: Black myrobalan, also known as bibhitaki or black myrobalan helps to regulate cholesterol levels and keeps muscle and bones healthy and strong. It is packed with nutrients like tannins, ellagic acid, gallic acid, lignans and flavonoids.

Haritaki: Haritaki is a nut-shaped fruit, which is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It is loaded with phytochemicals such as terpenes, polyphenols, anthocyanins and flavonoids. This herb is popularly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat digestive issues like constipation.

Different ways to add Triphala to your diet
Triphala is available in different forms. You can buy the capsules, powder or liquid, depending on your choice. It is recommended to take this herbal medicine between meals on an empty stomach for maximum absorption. The recommended doses range from 500 mg to one gram per day. You can have this herbal in four different ways

Triphala powder with cold water: Add 1 tablespoon of Triphala powder to a glass of water and leave it overnight. Drink the concoction in the morning.

Triphala powder with honey, and cinnamon: Add a teaspoon of Triphala powder in a glass of water and leave it overnight. In the morning, add a tablespoon of honey and half a teaspoon honey to this mixture and drink it.

Triphala tablet: Have one tablet with warm water at night before going to sleep.

Triphala tea: You can also make Triphala tea using Triphala powder. For preparing the tea, add a tablespoon of Triphala powder to a cup of hot water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then drink your hot beverages.

Side-effects of having Triphala
Triphala is a herbal medicine that is safe for consumption and rarely has any side-effects. But some people may experience some reaction after consuming it. Consuming excess Triphala can lead to diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Even pregnant and breastfeeding women should be careful while consuming this herbal medicine. They should consult their doctors first to avoid any complications. If you are taking blood-thinning medicine then avoid this mixture as Indian gooseberry, one of the main components of Triphala may increase the risk of bleeding and bruising.
